Penthrox® is in a non-invasive, lightweight, portable, handheld inhaler. Providing emergency relief of moderate to severe pain for patients with trauma and associated pain.
Penthrox® affectionately know as ‘the green whistle’ in Australia and New Zealand, has been used extensively for over 30 years. Penthrox® belongs to a family of medicines called inhalation anaesthetics. At the recommended dose, Penthrox® provides short-term pain relief without producing anaesthesia.
The active ingredient, Methoxyflurane, provides rapid short-term analgesia using a portable inhaler device (Penthrox® inhaler). Its primary role is in acute trauma but it may also be used for brief procedures such as wound dressing or for patient transport.
Penthrox® has significant advantages over other analgesics such as nitrous oxide and morphine in that it is rapid, self-administered, non-addictive, non-narcotic, safe to use and provides strong pain relief.

Product description
- Penthrox® Inhaler: a hand-held inhaler, which is a small, lightweight, disposable, cylindrical polyethylene device with distinctive green color (looks like a whistle). 3.0 ml of methoxyflurane liquid is poured in to the device to be abosorbed by a wick within. A mouthpiece acting as a one-way valve internally allows air and methoxyflurane to be inhaled through the wick. The valve closes with respiratory expiration to prevent exhalations passing back through the wick and into the atmosphere.
- Activated carbon filter: used to filter unused methoxyflurane from the air exhaled by the casualty, minimising exposure to the gas by the first aiders and bystanders.
- Dilution hole: allows the inhaler to adjust the concentration of the dose. When the dilution hole is open, the Penthrox inhaler delivers lower concentrations. When a finger is held over the dilution hole to close it, the inhaler delivers the medicine in a more concentrated form, which provides greater pain relief. The supervisor/trained staff will advise you whether or not you should close the dilution hole, or leave it open.
- Wrist strap, which can be fasten onto the wrist of the patient, for easy use and support.
